Most of us, living in modern communities, don’t understand the significance of one of the most amazing biblical declarations of who God is, from a powerful word picture presented by Solomon in Proverbs 18:10, “The name of the Lord is a strong tower – the righteous run into it and they are safe!” Let me explain what this verse is referring to: If you have ever visited ancient cities like Corinth, or Athens in Greece, you know that cities (especially significant ones) were built at the base of such high places as Acrocorinth (“high Corinth”). Many other cities were similarly positioned on, near or next to a steep, high hill or mountain place.
People used the advantages of the topography available to them to build powerful, elevated fortresses atop those high hills or cliffs – so that protection could be provided by the army garrisons posted for easy defense, and where they could see for miles around. They also could see the signals sent from other high watch posts, or fortresses that people could flee into for protection. These fortress cities form powerful defensive positions, thanks to their high elevations, massive walls, sheer cliffs, and great heights. These mighty fortresses made them nearly impossible to conquer – even the road leading up to them was often narrow, and were overshadowed by specially designed portals from which the defending army from above could rain arrows, hot oil, blazing logs, and boulders down on their enemies beneath. These strong defensive positions secured the safety of these high fortresses against innumerable enemy armies for generations.
Additionally, the fortress also served another purpose; The defending army also had the advantage of knowing the enemy’s movements, and could plan the perfect offensive countermeasure against them enemy, coordinating the attack from high above, to provide maximum impact against their unsuspecting foes, as they rushed out of these high fortresses to ambush or attack lesser armies at the point of their greatest weakness, and successfully route the enemy at their weakest position.
Write this truth deep into your heart, as you wage war against the enemy in your life today: The name of the Lord is – our high tower – our impregnable defensive position – our place of divine protection against all the enemies that come to attack us. And when the righteous – the wise righteous – remember to run into the Lord for protection against their enemies – they are saved! Sometimes, believers wonder why they are not able to win their battles against the enemy of our souls (the devil, and his demonic forces), but the reason for their struggles is made clear for us here. Too many believers try to fight the enemy alone, without the Lord’s help. They think calling on the name of the Lord in their struggle, or running to the Lord for protection during their battle implies that they are weak. But that’s not true at all. Name any great warrior throughout history, and you will quickly discover that they relied on their fellow warriors in battle. A wise warrior never fights alone – when their own army stands ready to assist in the battle. Why would they? That would be foolish in the extreme. Bravery isn’t synonymous with foolish. Foolish warriors go it alone. But wise warriors take advantage of all the resources available to them, and by combining their bravery with their wisdom, they crush their enemies through their combined strength.
I pray we will get this truth deep into our spirit today – and learn to do exactly what the Lord tells us to do; Run into the Lord – fight side-by-side with Him in battle – take advantage of His power against your enemies! By doing so, you will become victorious in the same battlefields where you were defeated previously. It’s time to fight smarter, to rely on the Lord instead our weak selves, and gain the victories so desperately needed in this day!
Before we wrap this up, I would like to briefly share another scriptural picture about the high fortress, from David, in Psalm 121:1, “I lift up my eyes to the mountains, from whence comes my help – my help comes from the Lord.” Literally, this means that we are cognizant of the fact that the Lord dwells in the high fortress, with His mighty army, and those in the lower portion of the city below, will lift up their eyes to the high fortress, when they see the enemy attacking them, and will call out for the help of the Lord. And here’s the Lord’s promise to you: The Lord will rush to your defense – to crush the enemy who comes to attack you – in His perfectly coordinated strike at the heart of the enemy forces that fight against you. And best of all; He will obliterate the enemy with the power that flows from His high and holy mountain!
Wow – I hope we have that written down in our memory – so the next battle we face, we do not face alone, but we will call on the name of the Lord, and be saved from our enemies, as He rushes to our defense! God’s plan is to give you the victory! Isn’t it time to stop relying on you – and put your complete trust, and confidence in the power of the Living God, who fights to make you victorious over every enemy, every day?
1 John 5:14-15 (Amplified Bible, Classic Edition) “And this is the confidence (the assurance, the privilege of boldness) which we have in Him: [we are sure] that if we ask anything (make any request) according to His will (in agreement with His own plan), He listens to and hears us. And if (since) we [positively] know that He listens to us in whatever we ask, we also know [with settled and absolute knowledge] that we have [granted us as our present possessions] the requests made of Him.”
